Ceca is variously portrayed as vulgar, attractive, the embodiment of a real Serbian woman, a sexy diva, a divinely seductive siren of emotional songs, a loving mother, and the widow of a Serbian warlord. 12 While anything “collective” is questioned, individualism is both encouraged and expected of all citizens. This chapter examines how Ceca, through her music and image management, mediates between a violent past and a transnationally intertwined present and future. Ceca’s global transformation provides a compelling case study of the ways in which Balkan turbo-folk singers are both produced and consumed in a transnationally networked, mediatized environment.

She thus passed the scrutiny of proximate judgment. For the king, showing his good reputation in the day-to-day world of proximate interactions was another story. Although his image was broadcast across the country from the time he was a child, royal protocol tightly controls media reports about the life of the royal family. 11 What was publicized as Salma’s “ordinariness” and the fact that she had a life in the neighborhood and at school that predated her being a part of the royal couple allowed the king some measure of association with the everyday world of proximity.

Especially after the wars and the subsequent fall of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, new cross-border cultural relations and practices emerged between the seven resulting states (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Kosovo). In this new cultural scenario, turbo-folk music and Ceca, its iconic singer, stand out as illustrative of the new and emergent transnational ethos. 3 It was around the same time that Serbia lost four wars, endured widespread poverty and violence, was bombed by NATO, and was threatened by international isolation.
