No other professional group currently embraces holism as an adjunct to its putative status in society. Whatever the difficulties involved in discussing nursing as a caring profession, holism is the linchpin of its claim to 18 The whole truth? autonomy from medicine. Undermine holism as a philosophical position and the central assumptions of some contemporary nursing groups collapse. Before addressing the philosophical issues however it may help to outline the basic tenets of holism and say something of its development within western thought.

This is a central tenet of his philosophy, that persons will strive towards growth and fulfilment or what Maslow (1987) called self-actualisation. However, people could become blocked in their drive towards actualisation, events or feelings could conspire against them moving forward. Rogers saw the counsellor’s task as intervening in these blocked states so as to help people ‘get more in touch with their feelings’. In this way they could know better how to move on. How he went about this resulted in the biggest shake-up that psychotherapy has seen either before or since.

There now emerged a veritable playground of emotions, therapeutic engagements that are as much about feeling as reasoning. The essence of this view is that if one has an experience which one can trust, then one simply trusts it and by so doing ‘one validates experience as a basis for actions which flow from it’. Hence, a series of conditions emerge which appear to have little to do with education, learning, structure and so on.
