Weights, treadmills, and swimming began to resurrect me. I realized how much I missed adrenaline. I missed lactic acid build-up. I even missed chlorine. Mostly, I missed myself. My body began to feel better. So did my head. They both seemed to want me to be an athlete again. Okay, I agreed, okay, I’ll try. There was even an edible reason for me to keep trying: I was offered a sponsorship to compete as a triathlete for Team Sport Beans/NTTC, which would give me stipends based on my race performances and eighty pounds of free Jelly Belly beans each year.

Or older prodigies who can rock out some fast times and show some incredible skill. I showed good skill, but not good enough. I am, however, grateful that Dragomir and Janusz gave me the opportunity to try. While living on Beth’s couch, I schedule a tryout with the national team of women’s team handball in Cortland, New York. I am excited and determined to take on a new sport, but nervous about the fact that I have never even seen a handball. My brain, which suffers from ignorance-is-blissism, assures me that team handball can’t possibly be harder than modern pentathlon.

The United States has Sheila Taormina, a two-time Olympic swimmer and triathlete ranked second in pentathlon as of 2008. If she makes the Olympic team, she’ll go down in history as the only female athlete to make the games in three different sports. And then of course, there is me, with no Olympic credentials, trying to get onto the national team with a decent swim, a sub-par run, and no experience in three of the five sports. Between the swim and the run, there is some technical business to attend to.
