The rewarding query is, then, “which are the conditions for each standard?” and, conversely, “which level of democratization canned be attained under given conditions?” The point is not simply that there is no one factor crucially associated with the success of democracy; the point is also that the cluster of factors has a historical dimension, in the sense that all the relevant factors have to be considered in a sequence, with reference to their order of succession, their tempo, and their timing.

There was not much talk of ecumenism in those days in the Holy Roman Catholic Church. What seem like not legitimate choices today could become very legitimate choices in the future. As a result, all, or nearly all, elected offices are members of one of the two major parties. It is clear to any ordinary observer that her beliefs on these points go beyond Catholicism into a gnostic fantasy land attainable only by the politically initiated.

Along with these points of commonality, each side also brings something to the table that the other lacks. As its subtitle suggests, however, the most interesting questions raised in the book concern "democracy, power, and the neoconservative legacy." All are free to relate to me as the senior pastor, or apostolic covering, which they gladly do. Interviews in both 1994 and 1996 suggest one other, rather deeply ingrained cultural characteristic that may contribute to the high emphasis on orderly society in much of East Asia: a traditional aversion to conflict in interpersonal relations, the instinct to try to settle differences gradually, using intermediaries in some countries, even putting off a final decision if there is still strong minority opposition.

Politics and Regulation 3 sem. hrs. The result is a distinctively Habermasian critique of science and technology as ideology: by reducing practical questions about the good life to technical problems for experts, contemporary elites eliminate the need for public, democratic discussion of values, thereby depoliticizing the population (1970, chap. 6). The reason why supporters of the democracy project have to take an uncompromising attitude against all these irrational belief systems is that they enslave people to heteronomous ways of thinking and heteronomously derived values.

The idea – breathtaking, radical and revolutionary at the time (in many places in the world, it still is) is that not kings, not priests, not big city bosses, not dictators, not a military cabal, not a de facto conspiracy of the wealthy, but ordinary people, working together, are to rule the nations. In fact, Norwegian kids, who are well acquainted in early childhood with many different adults and children, know how to get along with grown ups and look after one another. Some of them, realizing that the consumer society was associated with a huge concentration of political and economic power at the hands of small elites, turned to radical politics.

For the first time, students were thinking of themselves as “agents of social change.” The buoyancy of this strategy, perhaps carried on the innocence of the young, was a momentous break from the culture of the left in those times, which was dispirited by McCarthyism, bogged down in poisonous factional disputes and weighted with the ideological language and baggage of a Marxism that remained foreign to most Americans.
